Investigators in Peel Region are warning potential victims of an online dating extortion scheme following a recent incident in Brampton that resulted in a victim losing $6,000. The alleged victim initially connected with a suspect on a messaging platform under the name Manisha Sharma. Rather than meeting for a romantic date, the victim was robbed of cold hard cash.

According to a police statement, the victim attended a residential basement apartment near Torbram Road and Peter Roberston Boulevard in Brampton shortly after agreeing to meet in person in August. A male suspect entered the room and threatened the victim, extorting $6,000 through an e-transfer. Upon investigation, police identified two suspects, Harwinder Singh, 35, and Riya Riya, 23, both residents of Brampton.

Harwinder faces an additional charge of uttering threats. Authorities believe there may be more victims who experienced similar incidents under the guise of casual dating and urge anyone with relevant information to come forward and contact the police.
