Payments firm Stripe to buy AI developer platform OpenRouter

Payments firm Stripe announced on August 19 that it has reached an agreement to acquire AI developer platform OpenRouter for an undisclosed amount. OpenRouter assists businesses in efficiently routing and optimizing the usage of AI tokens, a crucial resource for companies developing with artificial intelligence. Platforms such as OpenRouter have become a favored environment for testing and refining new AI systems.

Stripe's CEO, Patrick Collison, highlighted during the announcement the growing importance of effectively utilizing scarce compute resources, a vital factor in determining the actual economic potential of AI. Earlier reports indicated Stripe was set to purchase OpenRouter for over $7 billion, with the figure confirmed by Bloomberg News.

The company has not yet provided a statement regarding the acquisition, and OpenRouter has yet to respond to a request for comment from Reuters.
