Payments firm Stripe to buy AI developer platform OpenRouter

On August 19, payments company Stripe announced plans to acquire OpenRouter, an AI developer platform, at an undisclosed sum. OpenRouter simplifies the process for developers by enabling them to interact with multiple AI models through a single interface. Tokens serve as the primary currency in the AI industry, making efficient use of limited computational resources crucial for real-world applications.

Stripe's CEO, Patrick Collison, emphasized this economic potential in his statement. Prior to this report, Bloomberg News had suggested a deal value of over $7 billion based on confidential sources. Stripe has not commented on the acquisition, and OpenRouter has yet to respond to a request for information from Reuters.
