Mumbai police have arrested a 32-year-old BTech graduate named Sonu Kumar, who is accused of masterminding an engineering admission racket. Kumar, an MIT College, Pune alumnus, allegedly duped at least 35 students out of around Rs50 lakh by promising management and NRI-quota engineering seats.
The police claim that Kumar, who had failed to find a job after completing his BTech, recruited nine unemployed engineers from Bihar, Haryana, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh to help carry out the scam. The individuals were allegedly recruited to pose as tourists staying in rented flats in Viman Nagar, Mumbai, while they were actually based near Pune airport.
According to senior inspector Atmaji Sawant, all ten individuals involved were either unemployed or had small jobs. Kumar's real estate venture had also failed, leading him to resort to this scheme. The police traced the alleged racketeers after receiving information about their movements near Pune airport. They subsequently conducted a 36-hour raid on three flats on August 15.
