In the city of Petaling Jay, homeowners need to inform their insurance company when installing a permanent EV charging system to ensure the property coverage accurately reflects the cost of rebuilding.

PIAM's Chief Executive Officer, Chua Kim Soon, stated that declaring the electrical system upgrade helps expedite claims processing and safeguards homeowners from inadequate coverage risks. The association's guidelines follow a recent fire incident in Alam Damai, Cheras, involving an EV in the driveway that is believed to have caused the fire, ultimately destroying a two-story house.

Concerned about the risk of EV charging, PIAM explained that standard home and fire insurance policies cover damages claimed, including fire damage regardless of the cause, provided there is no fraud, intentional act or breach of policy terms. According to the association, permanent home EV chargers are classified as additions and building components under home insurance policies.

However, detachable or non-permanently connected charging cables typically fall under motor vehicle insurance or a separate protection package. PIAM also emphasized the importance of proper installation by professionals while explaining that insurance companies will assess official investigation reports, such as those from fire departments, to verify compliance with electrical safety standards and reject any unauthorized modifications.
