According to PIAM, stationary EV charging units that are permanently installed are classified as renovations and building additions under home insurance policies. In Petaling Jaya, homeowners must notify their respective insurance companies when installing a permanent charger for electric vehicles (EVs) to ensure the property coverage accurately reflects the replacement cost of the home, according to the Malaysia Amicable Insurance Association (PIAM).

PIAM's Executive Officer, Chua Kim Soon, stated that noting any upgrades to the electrical system aids in expediting claim processes and protects homeowners from insufficient coverage (underinsured). The association's guidelines followed a recent fire incident in Alam Damai, Cheras, involving an EV being charged on the driveway, which was believed to have caused the fire and destroyed the two-story house.

Concerns about the risk of EV chargers prompted PIAM to explain that standard home and fire insurance policies cover damage attributed, regardless of the cause of the fire, as long as there is no fraud, intentional act, or breach of policy terms. PIAM clarified that permanently installed stationary EV chargers classified as renovations and building additions under home insurance policies.

However, portable or non-permanently connected charging cables typically fall under motorcycle insurance or additional specialized protection packages. PIAM emphasized the importance of professional installation while explaining that insurance companies will review official investigation reports, such as those from fire departments, to confirm compliance with electrical safety standards and reject any unauthorized modifications.
