California is leading a lawsuit against Meta for allegedly encouraging excessive use of its social media platforms among minors. The German news agency dpa filed the complaint. A group of 29 states claims the tech giant hides the risk of addiction from parents and the public. Meta denies the allegations. The trial in Oakland started with opening statements on Tuesday.

California, through the state, is seeking financial penalties and changes to Meta's business model. Recently, Meta argued in court that the requested penalties are excessive and could threaten the company's existence. While Meta has lost several cases in US courts, it recently faced a case in New Mexico where the company was ordered to pay over half a billion dollars to compensate children harmed by social media use.

The company is also required to introduce additional restrictions for users under 18 in the state, including limiting their Facebook and Instagram usage to a maximum of 90 hours per month. Meta plans to appeal. In February, Meta and video platform Google YouTube faced a major case in Los Angeles regarding the addictive nature of their streaming services, such as unlimited moderation and algorithm-based content recommendation.

Both companies were found liable and ordered to pay $6 million to a young woman. They are also planning to appeal the decision.
