'Kala Hiran' Teaser Row: Producer Moves SC, Calls Order 'Private Censorship'

The Supreme Court has been approached by film producer Amit Jani in protest of a recent Delhi High Court order, which mandated the removal of the teaser and related promotional materials for his film, Kala Hiran - The Battle For Legacy. The High Court's interim order, issued on July 27, 2026, mandated the immediate deletion of the teaser, contending that it infringed upon Bollywood actor Salman Khan's personality rights and was damaging his reputation.

This legal dispute originated from the release of the teaser on July 17, 2026, and its widespread dissemination via press releases, promotional videos, social media posts, YouTube videos, podcasts, and other online and offline platforms. Salman Khan alleged that the promotional campaign was exploiting his persona without his consent.

The Delhi High Court ruled in favor of the actor, ordering the immediate takedown of the teaser to uphold his personality rights. The filmmaker's appeal to the Supreme Court questioned the High Court's decision, arguing that it would potentially lead to private censorship, enabling public figures to seek gag orders against any artistic, journalistic, or historical expression related to them.

Upholding the actor's claim, the appeal emphasized that permitting such censorship would have a chilling effect on independent filmmaking, journalism, and the dramatization of matters falling within the public domain and public interest.
