Journey to Gunsan

My recent journey to Gunsan, North Jeolla Province, commenced with an unexpectedly lavish bus ride. Accompanied by two companions on a sweltering summer morning, we boarded the express bus and were immediately captivated by its opulent interior. The reclining seats, privacy curtains, personal screens, and complimentary bottled water aboard were far beyond our initial expectations for a simple bus journey.

Upon our arrival in the city, our first point of interest was Iseongdang, the renowned bakery of Gunsan. Despite the oppressive heat, we eagerly lined up for freshly baked pastries and aromatic coffee, treating the experience as a delightful prelude to our brunch plans.

Following our pastry indulgence, we embarked on an afternoon stroll that led us to the historic Gyeongnam-dong Railroad Village. The village's nostalgic ambiance, with its antique shop facades, evoked a strangely familiar atmosphere reminiscent of a Japanese festival, or "omatsuri." It felt simultaneously fascinating and surreal, as though a time machine had whisked us away to a different country amid our stay in Korea—a peculiar paradox of nostalgia and historical melancholy.

However, the superficial charm of the village soon gave way to a more sobering truth upon our visit to the Gunsan Modern History Museum. The neon sign outside boldly proclaimed, "A," underscoring the museum's poignant exploration of Gunsan's tumultuous past.
