Full text: Statement by GoldBod CEO, Sammy Gyamfi at Government Accountability Series

Good morning, distinguished ladies and gentlemen of the press. I appreciate the chance to speak with you through your esteemed platforms about matters of importance to Ghana. Our partnership with the Ghana Gold Board (GOLDBOD) from the start has been very important in achieving our goal of creating value for Ghanaians and generating benefits for our nation from our gold assets.

Recently, there have been false stories about GOLDBOD that we need to put right. One particular person, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has been saying lies about GOLDBOD for months. He claims we made a loss of $1.7 billion in our gold trading in 2025. But that is not true. Our own audited report shows we made a profit of over $5.4 billion last year.

The Auditor-General, who checks these things, said there was no loss. They even found no problems with any of our records. So, we need to say clearly that GOLDBOD did not lose money in 2025.

But Afenyo-Markin and his friends are trying to change their story now. They say the IMF, a big international group, said the Bank of Ghana lost money through gold sales in 2025. But that’s not right. The IMF only said the Bank lost $400 million in 2024 and $1.7 billion in 2025 because they sold more gold than usual. They did not say GOLDBOD was responsible. Only a few small fees that the Bank paid to us are mentioned in the IMF report. So, the real story is that the Bank lost money, not GOLDBOD.
