Depay takes pay cut to stay at Corinthians

Memphis Depay agreed to reduce his salary to stay at Corinthians after the club refused to renew his contract. The former Manchester United player expressed frustration with the club's "unacceptable behavior" after they withdrew a previously agreed extension. However, Corinthians president Osmar Stabile confirmed that Depay has significantly lowered his financial demands, allowing for a new contract extension until 2028.

Stabile explained that the process was lengthy but ultimately successful, stating that they had to find a way to pay Depay while addressing the club's financial concerns. Depay, who has scored 20 goals in 79 appearances for Corinthians, helped the team win the Copa do Brasil in 2025 and the Supercopa do Brasil this year. The club is currently ninth in Brazil's Serie A and agreed to waive around R$21m (£2.9m) from R$75m (£10.6m) owed to Depay as part of the new two-year deal, worth R$135m (£19.1m) in total.

The remaining R$54m (£7.6m) will be paid in four installments starting in January 2027. Depay, the Netherlands' all-time leading goalscorer, failed to score in three appearances as his side was eliminated from the 2026 World Cup in the round of 32.
