Angélique Kidjo becomes the first Black African honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

Beninese music legend Angélique Kidjo has etched her name in Hollywood history by becoming the first African artist and first Black African musician to receive a star on the prestigious Hollywood Walk of Fame. The Grammy-winning artist was honored on Tuesday in Los Angeles during a ceremony, receiving the 2,854th star in the Recording category.

This milestone positions Kidjo among the world's most revered entertainment icons and signifies a major achievement for African music on the global stage. The honor came as part of the Hollywood Walk of Fame's Class of 2026, announced by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce in July 2025, alongside other notable artists such as Miley Cyrus, Josh Groban, Lyle Lovett, and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony.

Kidjo was accompanied by Oscar-nominated actor Willem Dafoe, Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr., Benin-born actor Djimon Hounsou, and Nigerian musician Adekunle Gold at the event. The Hollywood officials declared August 18 as "Angélique Kidjo Day" to mark this historic achievement. Born in Benin, Kidjo has carved an international reputation by blending West African musical traditions with genres such as funk, jazz, soul, and pop.

Her career, spanning over four decades, has yielded five Grammy Awards and collaborations with renowned artists worldwide. Kidjo emphasized during the ceremony that the honor represents a significant moment for Africa rather than a personal triumph. She has previously referred to the star as a testament not just to her but to the continent and its artists.

Hollywood Walk of Fame officials have commended Kidjo's artistry and global influence, noting her ability to connect audiences across generations and continents. For Kidjo, this recognition also carries a message for emerging African artists, showcasing how African sounds, stories, and cultural traditions can resonate internationally while preserving their authenticity.
