5 Americans among 7 people killed in Kenya helicopter crash

NBCUniversal said its Florida-based journalist, José Alberto Suárez, was among those killed in the crash.

A helicopter accident in northern Kenya killed seven people on Wednesday, including five Americans. The U.S. State Department confirmed the deceased Americans included a Telemundo TV station manager from Florida and a well-known Miami restaurateur. The crash occurred at 9:13 a.m. as the helicopter traveled from the Loisaba Conservancy to Ewaso Nyiro region in Samburu County.

The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority is investigating the incident. NBCUniversal also confirmed that its journalist José Alberto Suárez, president and general manager of Telemundo 31, 49, and Fort Myers–Naples, was among the fatalities. Samburu police commander David Nkoroi confirmed all seven passengers and the pilot died in the crash.

The helicopter belonged to local company Lady Lori Helicopters and was carrying guests from the travel company &Beyond. The crash site is located in a rugged area near Mount Ololokwe, a popular tourist destination. Search and recovery efforts are ongoing, complicated by the terrain and an active fire at the crash site.
