Wontumi Conviction: 2 star witnesses placed under police protection amid death threats

Two key prosecution witnesses in the case involving former Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, known as Chairman Wontumi, have received police protection due to an increase in death threats. Deputy Attorney General Dr Justice Srem-Sai revealed this on Joy News’ PM Express on Monday. The threats have escalated since Wontumi’s conviction, targeting not only the two star witnesses but also police investigators and members of the legal team, including Dr Srem-Sai.

Dr Srem-Sai emphasized that he and his colleagues take every threat seriously, regardless of the method used, such as threats to take their lives. He believes it is not necessary to publicize every threat, as doing so might provoke attempts to undermine the enforcement of the law. Dr Srem-Sai noted that threats are not exclusive to the Wontumi case, as prosecutors, judges, and lawyers handling serious criminal cases also face similar dangers.

He stated that his legal team and he receive such threats daily, not only in this case but also in other cases like murder and armed robbery. In addition to his legal team, judges are also victims of these threats. Dr Srem-Sai relies on both physical security measures and his faith for his personal safety, acknowledging that physical protection has its limits due to the unpredictable nature of threats.

He turns to his faith for reassurance, stating that while physical protection is essential, it is not enough to ensure his peace of mind.
