Why did Weldon Nelms return to coach Iowa Park football after 27 years?

Weldon Nelms, a member of Texas High School Coaches Association Hall of Honor, returned to coach Iowa Park football after a 27-year absence. Nelms, who coached Iowa Park from 1994 to 1999, took over as head football coach and interim athletic director in late June. He inherited a roster of approximately 32 players, including 12 seniors, as the Hawks prepare to move up to Class 4A Division II.

Nelms expressed his love for being around the kids and coaching them, stating that it is his passion. With the late start, he and his staff needed time to learn the roster and establish the framework of a program he had previously been a part of. Nelms believes that all 32 players can contribute in different ways, and he is particularly impressed by the performance of the underclassmen. He noted that several sophomores could start, particularly on defense, and he is optimistic about their potential.

One of the most significant decisions Nelms faces is at the quarterback position, where he sees two capable options in juniors Reed McClain and CJ McNeill. He acknowledges it will be a tough choice, as both players can control the ball and run, and both bring the necessary leadership expected from the football team. Nelms also highlighted the team's strong showing in their first scrimmage against Paradise, praising the players' passion and energy in handling a physical opponent.

The success of the Iowa Park football team, according to Nelms, will depend more on the collective effort of the group rather than a single standout player. He anticipates that the team will rely on its young core to perform beyond what is typically expected from players of that age. Iowa Park's season will commence with a game against Henrietta High School on August 28 at 7 p.m., followed by a series of non-district games against Holliday, Jefferson, City View, and Vernon before entering the district schedule.
