Iowa football lauds LB depth entering 2026 campaign

Last season, Iowa's linebacker room fell short of its typical standards. After relying on Jack Campbell and Jay Higgins for several seasons, the Hawkeyes did not achieve the same level of production in 2025 from their linebackers. Karson Sharar and Jaden Harrell played well, but did not stand out. Heading into the 2026 season, Iowa's linebackers appear to be in a much stronger position.

Jayden Montgomery and Cam Buffington are set to lead the room as starters, displaying significant promise. Behind them, players like Preston Ries, Landyn Van Kekerix, Nolan DeLong, and Derek Weisskopf have demonstrated talent on special teams and could see increased defensive opportunities. Iowa's linebackers coach, Seth Wallace, expressed great confidence in the depth and competition within the room.

Wallace noted that this might be the most depth and competition they have experienced in their 13 years coaching linebackers, partly due to the loss of three starters the previous year. Jayden Montgomery is the only returning starter with substantial experience, while Cam Buffington is excelling as well. However, six or seven additional players have shown impressive performances during camp.

Wallace also highlighted the strong cohesion among the linebackers, emphasizing their collective performance and dedication. Despite concerns from fans about the lack of experience in the linebacker room, Wallace remains optimistic about his team's ability to excel in 2026. With a new defensive line in front of them, Iowa will rely heavily on their linebackers to make crucial plays. The talent seems to be in place for the group to meet and exceed expectations.
