What Trump’s latest safeguard tariff move on quartz surface products means for India

India has lodged a complaint with the World Trade Organisation (WTO) over the recent implementation of safeguard tariffs by the US government. Effective August 15, these tariffs will range from 25% to 55% on quartz surface products. India claims a significant interest in this matter and has requested access to US information and the opportunity to discuss the issue under the WTO Agreement on Safeguards. The discussions are expected to be held virtually, though no specific date has been set.

Quartz surface products, essential for kitchen countertops, bathroom vanities, floors, and wall cladding, comprise a significant portion of India's exports to the US. In fiscal year 2026, the US accounted for 72.5% of India's quartz surface-product exports, with shipments valued at $233.3 million. Most of India's production is concentrated in Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Telangana, with additional capacity in Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka, primarily in the cities of Ahmedabad, Surat, and Hyderabad.

The US safeguard tariffs, which will last for four years, will impact Indian manufacturers heavily as they have tailored their products to meet the US market's specific requirements. Consequently, it will be challenging for Indian producers to shift to alternative markets swiftly. India's exports will attract an additional 25% duty on imports within the quota and a 50% tariff on those exceeding it.
