We’ll get back to Education Minister after 48 hours – GAUA on suspension of strike

The Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) has stated that its nationwide strike continues, despite a meeting with Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu on Monday. The union's leader has given a 48-hour window for the Minister to brief its members on the outcome before deciding whether to suspend the strike. "We will return to our constituents and then report back to the Minister after 48 hours," the union representative assured.

The meeting, attended by GAUA, TUSAAG, Vice-Chancellors Ghana, and the Education Ministry, aimed to address issues such as salary adjustments, job evaluation, and conditions of service. The Minister requested the unions to grant him a month to resolve the issues and provide necessary data. However, GAUA Secretary Charles Aidoo warned that past agreements with previous Education Ministers have not yielded lasting solutions.

Members now demand tangible action on their concerns, expressing frustration over the prolonged dispute. The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has ordered senior university officials to return to work, exempting Vice-Chancellors, Registrars, and other executive positions from industrial action. The strike has already disrupted university activities, including the suspension of exams at institutions like the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS).

GAUA remains committed to consulting its members and expects to inform the Minister of their decision within the next 48 hours.
