'I'm really appalled for what they've done' - More parents continue fight over coloured sand

A Christchurch couple's Disputes Tribunal win over Kmart for their twins playing with asbestos-laced play sand has inspired other parents to fight for accountability. The tribunal ordered Kmart to pay $15,185.42 for asbestos testing and remediation costs. Kmart sold 67,000 units of the contaminated products. Following the decision, more parents came forward with their own claims.

A Hamilton mother said she was relieved by the ruling and would continue to pursue payment from Kmart, hoping her experience would encourage other families to take action. The tribunal did not grant the couple's claim for long-term medical monitoring costs, citing too many unknown factors. Kmart stated that product safety is their top priority and they acted swiftly to remove affected products from shelves and support customers.
