US Navy destroyer with 300 sailors aboard broke down for four days in the Pacific

A U.S. Navy destroyer, the USS Benfold, experienced a significant breakdown in the Pacific Ocean last month, leaving it without power for four days, according to a Navy statement. The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer, which carries around 300 sailors, reported an engineering issue involving its generators on July 24, causing a loss of essential power, according to Cmdr.

Matthew Comer, a Navy spokesman. During the incident, the crew was without drinking water, meals, functioning toilets, and air conditioning for several days. The situation became public on Friday, following initial reports by USNI News. The incident occurs amid concerns about the quality of life aboard naval vessels and the military's capacity to support ships during conflict with Iran.

Democratic lawmakers are calling for investigations into the conditions on the USS Abraham Lincoln, which has been at sea for a record 250 uninterrupted days, reported shortages of supplies, including food and hygiene products, and reported stress and mental health issues among crew members. Navy officials emphasized that no injuries occurred to the Benfold's crew, who demonstrated resilience and professionalism in their response.

The Benfold required assistance from the USS George Washington carrier strike group, with the cruiser USS Robert Smalls providing meals to the destroyer. Ultimately, the Benfold had to be towed to Subic Bay, in the Philippines, for repairs and returned to service on July 28 with all systems functioning normally.
