AAP MLA detained for 10 hours amid sanitation worker’s cremation, Rs 10-lakh aid for family

On the third day of protests following the killing of sanitation worker Anil Kumar in East Delhi, AAP MLA Kuldeep Kumar was detained by police for more than ten hours. Delhi Mayor announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh and a job for one member of Anil's family. Kumar's wife, Deepa, filed a Habeas Corpus petition in the Delhi High Court, alleging that her husband was forcibly taken away by police while he was asleep at home.

The court later released Kumar after he was informed that his party would file a petition. Kumar claimed he was "kidnapped" by around 150 plain-clothed officers who took him to a Narcotics Department office. Police stated that Kumar and five others, including members of the Bhim Army, were detained for allegedly instigating a disturbance and obstructing garbage collection work.

The court ruled that Kumar's release had satisfied the purpose of the petition and dismissed the Habeas Corpus plea. The body of Anil Kumar, a 27-year-old sanitation worker, was cremated in Ghaziabad after protests and pressure from the family and police. The family had expressed dissatisfaction with the compensation offered, demanding a government job for Anil's elder brother and addressing the financial instability of the family.
