UK risks running out of gas by 2030s, ministers told

British ministers have been warned that the country could face a gas supply shortage within a decade, despite its increasing use of clean energy sources, according to an official assessment. The government is considering providing direct financial support to safeguard the aging gas infrastructure after a consultation found that a "high stress scenario" could see homes and businesses running out of gas within the next decade.

Most respondents to the consultation agreed with the National Energy System Operator's warning that an "emerging risk to gas supply security" could leave homes and businesses without gas during prolonged cold periods by 2030. Energy Minister Michael Shanks said any government intervention in the gas market would be unprecedented and would need careful consideration.

He said the UK will continue to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels by growing its clean energy sources, but the gas system will still be crucial for decades. The government is weighing options to support the gas sector, including financial assistance for gas storage facilities and pipeline operators to upgrade and maintain them.

Gas has been a significant part of the UK's energy consumption, providing more than a third last year, though domestic supplies are expected to decline faster than demand. The UK's North Sea fields, which have been in decline for 25 years, are projected to produce about 5% less gas each year, raising concerns about future gas security.
