Social clubs must become engines of national development – Ace Anan Ankomah

Legal expert Ace Anan Ankomah urged Ghanaian social clubs to shift their focus from mere fellowship to becoming engines of national development. Speaking at the 25th Anniversary Lecture of The Union Social Club, he emphasized that clubs needed to mobilize resources and networks to create lasting social impact, stressing that nation-building couldn't solely rely on government efforts.

Ankomah, a former lecturer at the Ghana School of Law, argued that volunteer associations, alumni bodies, and professional societies played a crucial role in building stronger communities, promoting public service, and nurturing ethical leaders. He highlighted that trust, mutual respect, and shared responsibility were essential for social groups to achieve their goals.

Ankomah called for a shift away from casual gatherings towards initiatives that addressed specific issues in education, health, and other sectors, with measurable outcomes. He stressed the importance of bringing together people with different backgrounds who are united by a common purpose. The Union Social Club's President, Dr. Isaac Adupong, acknowledged the club's contributions over the years and pledged to adapt while staying committed to its founding ideals, emphasizing that the club's future lies in the hands of the next generation.
