Sheikh Hasina’s daughter questions WHO action against her, calls for investigation

Sheikh Hasina's daughter, Saima Wazed, has raised concerns over her indefinite leave from the World Health Organisation (WHO), calling for an independent investigation. Wazed, who took charge as WHO's Regional Director for the South-East Asia Region in February 2024, was placed on leave in July 2024 following corruption, fraud, and abuse of power charges filed by Bangladesh's Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

Wazed has alleged that her dismissal was politically motivated, highlighting that it came at the behest of Bangladesh's interim government, led by Mohammad Yunus, and without following proper due process. She has raised multiple concerns, including WHO's alleged direct communication with Bangladesh's ACC and other officials of the interim government, suggesting a breach of due process and protocol for diplomatic communication.

Additionally, Wazed has accused WHO of bias and harassment, alleging that her nomination was misrepresented to member states, causing damage to her reputation. WHO has acknowledged receiving some of her emails but has not provided clarity on any ongoing review of the complaints. The organisation confirmed that Wazed remains on leave, stating that there are established channels for staff members to raise complaints while maintaining confidentiality.
