Russia reports more than 600 drones heading toward capital region

On the evening of August 17, Russian authorities reported that over 600 drones were en route to the capital region of Moscow and Moscow Oblast. Mayor Sergei Sobyanin claimed that 620 drones were heading toward the area between Monday evening and 5 a.m. on Tuesday. The governor of Moscow Oblast, Andrei Vorobyov, described the attack as "large-scale" and stated that 180 drones were destroyed over the region.

A Wildberries warehouse was hit in the Bogorodsky district near Atlant Park, resulting in a fire that was later contained. Footage from the attack, including a drone flying over the Moscow region, was later published by Fire Point. Reports of explosions at the Moscow oil refinery and a possible strike on warehouse infrastructure in Obukhovo emerged.

The full extent of the damage and casualties remained unclear, as Russian authorities did not initially disclose this information. Emergency services were deployed to sites where drone debris had fallen. On August 18, Russia's Federal Air Transport Agency temporarily restricted flights at Moscow's Vnukovo, Domodedovo, Zhukovsky, and Sheremetyevo airports due to the incident.
