Patrick Vieira appointed new Senegal Coach as Teranga Lions begin new era

Patrick Vieira, a former esteemed midfielder who once graced the ranks of Arsenal and France, has been named the new head coach of the Senegal national football team. The announcement was made by the Senegalese Football Federation on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, following the resignation of Pape Thiaw. Vieira's appointment signifies his return to international football, where he will lead a team recognized as one of Africa's most formidable footballing nations.

Born in Dakar in 1976 and raised in France, Vieira had a distinguished career that included playing a pivotal role in France's triumph in the 1998 FIFA World Cup. Esteemed for his leadership, intelligence, and poised midfield play, Vieira became one of the premier players of his generation. His dedication to football in Senegal is further highlighted by his role in establishing the Diambars Academy in 2003, an organization aimed at cultivating young football talent in the country.

Vieira's return to Senegal as coach is more than a coaching job; it's a personal homecoming. With Senegal's recent elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the Round of 32, Vieira's top priority will be to prepare the Teranga Lions for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations. The qualifiers for this tournament are set to begin in September.

At 50 years old, Vieira brings extensive club management experience from New York City FC, Nice, Crystal Palace, Strasbourg, and Genoa. This broad experience in various football environments will be instrumental as he seeks to mold Senegal into a competitive and disciplined team.

Facing the challenge of getting Senegal ready for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, Vieira's appointment presents both a significant opportunity and a formidable task. His return could very well herald a new chapter of success for the Teranga Lions.
