Nairobi–Nakuru–Mau Summit Highway: Treasury gives update on construction progress

The Nairobi-Nakuru-Mau Summit Highway, a Public Private Partnership (PPP) project, is currently in a critical phase as the Kenyan government works to resolve outstanding issues and near financial closure. This development followed the seventh Interagency Project Steering Committee meeting, held on August 18, 2026, at the National Treasury.

Officials, including Raymond Omollo from Internal Security and National Administration, and Joseph Mbugua from Roads, reviewed the project's progress and agreed on essential actions to maintain its implementation.

Construction works are underway across several sections of the highway, with earthworks, drainage, and bridge works already in progress. Preparations for pavement construction are also advancing. The committee assessed the Mau Summit-Eldoret-Malaba corridor's progress, focusing on preparatory activities and measures to accelerate the project as directed by President William Ruto. Key actions required from both the government and project sponsors were agreed upon to keep the project on track.

Resolving outstanding issues and strengthening coordination among agencies and sponsors remain the government's priorities to accelerate the project's implementation. The government plans to continue leveraging PPP arrangements and private capital to finance major infrastructure projects, arguing that this approach will support long-term economic growth while reducing pressure on public finances.

The Nairobi-Nakuru-Mau Summit Highway, expected to improve connectivity on Kenya's busiest transport corridor, and the Mau Summit-Eldoret-Malaba corridor, which is vital for trade and regional connectivity, will benefit from continued collaboration between the government, project sponsors, and relevant agencies to overcome remaining hurdles and ensure completion.
