Mining must be managed as generational trust – Ga Mantse

The Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, has emphasized the need for responsible management of Ghana's mineral resources, treating mining as more than a commercial venture. He stressed that traditional authorities have long viewed land as a custodian of trust for present and future generations. King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, speaking at the National Mining Dialogue 2026, warned that mining concessions carry implications beyond immediate financial gains.

He reminded that custodianship of land is temporary, obligating current generations to prevent exploitation that might deprive future generations of their inheritance. He cautioned that granting mining concessions should not be viewed as a mere transaction between stakeholders, but as an access to preserved resources whose exploitation could have long-term consequences.

He urged mining companies to acknowledge their responsibilities towards host communities, the environment, and future generations. King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II acknowledged that responsible mining can significantly contribute to national and community development, offering infrastructure and social services. He proposed that mining revenues and corporate investments could support education, skills development, and create sustainable employment opportunities for young people.

He called for a balanced mining regime that ensures economic benefits, environmental protection, community development, and the interests of future generations.
