Jasikan midwives deliver baby at roadside

In a remarkable display of quick thinking and medical expertise, two midwives at the Jasikan Municipal Hospital delivered a baby on the roadside at White House Junction, a suburb of Jasikan in the Oti Region. The incident unfolded on Saturday, August 15, when a distressed call reached the hospital about a woman in labor stranded at the junction while en route to the hospital.

Ms Monica Fiati and Ms Francisca Logosu, both from the Labour Ward, sprang into action upon receiving the alert. Upon their arrival, they discovered that the baby's head had already emerged, prompting them to assist the mother in completing the delivery. The mother, Ms Mukaila Talahatu, was in advanced labor when the alert reached the hospital.

After the successful delivery, the mother and her newborn were transported to the Jasikan Municipal Hospital for further medical assessment and care. Ms Fiati recounted that the mother experienced a minor complication post-delivery but was receiving the necessary medical attention. The woman had visited the hospital on Friday, August 14, but was advised to return home as she was not yet due for delivery.

On Saturday, August 15, she began experiencing labor pains and attempted to secure a vehicle to take her to the hospital, but her efforts were unsuccessful. Her sister eventually arrived and decided to walk towards the hospital, hoping to find a vehicle along the way. Upon reaching White House Junction, the baby's head emerged, prompting Ms Talahatu's sister to seek immediate assistance.

The incident was witnessed by Ms Linda Ofori, the owner of the White House Restaurant, who heard screams around 0411 hours. Gathering her courage, Ms Ofori ventured outside to find the woman in labor with the baby's head already visible. She advised Ms Talahatu's sister to seek a vehicle and transport her to the hospital. A midwife arrived at the scene in her vehicle and successfully assisted the woman in delivering the baby, after which both were taken to the hospital for further care.

Ms Ofori praised the midwives' prompt action and commended them for their exceptional work. The incident underscores the critical importance of timely emergency response and access to skilled birth attendants, especially in situations where timely access to health facilities is impeded.
