Google ‘gradually’ rolling out Android’s ‘advanced’ sideloading ahead of developer verification

Google is proceeding with the phased roll-out of its "advanced" sideloading feature for Android before the developer verification process commences next month. This advanced sideloading flow aims to enhance user protection by introducing friction, primarily through a one-time, one-day waiting period between enabling the installation of apps from unverified developers and the actual installation of the app.

Google announced in June that its developer verification changes were on track for a September launch in select regions. Now, Google is implementing the first version of this new process. To enable this feature, users must navigate to Developer options and turn on "Allow apps from unverified developers." Subsequently, warnings will appear, prompting users to go through a one-time, 24-hour waiting period that can be completed by returning to the same page.

The setting can be temporarily enabled for seven days or made permanent. It's important to note that ADB installs remain unaffected by this change, and developer options can be disabled after enabling the advanced sideloading flow. The "Android Developer Verifier" app, responsible for delivering this functionality, is being rolled out gradually.

While developer verification begins on September 30 in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand, it will become globally available next year.
