Ghana hosts Kenya, Netherlands, South Africa for talks on turning climate plans into action

Four nations – Ghana, Kenya, the Netherlands, and South Africa – gathered in Ghana for a three-day summit focused on transforming national climate adaptation plans into concrete actions. The meeting aimed to foster practical implementation of climate commitments, with financing, collaboration, and stakeholder engagement identified as crucial areas for progress.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) of Ghana, represented by Nana Dr Antwi-Boasiako Amoah, emphasized that climate policies must shift from formulation to implementation. He stressed that the effectiveness of climate planning depends on a country's capacity to mobilize resources and partnerships necessary for policy execution. Amoah warned against policies that remain merely on paper, urging a stronger focus on implementation to deliver tangible benefits to communities grappling with climate change impacts.

South Africa’s Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and Environment, represented by Thabang Phago, advocated for enhanced collaboration among stakeholders. Phago stressed that successful climate action necessitates collaboration across government institutions, communities, and other key stakeholders, rather than isolated interventions. He also highlighted the importance of adequate financing in implementing climate policies, ensuring that necessary resources are readily available to support agreed measures.

Kenya’s Deputy Director of the Climate Change Directorate, Thomas Lerenten Leleloitien, shared insights on Kenya’s efforts to implement its climate adaptation policy. The discussions among the participating countries offered a platform to exchange experiences and explore strategies that could bolster the implementation of national adaptation measures.

As countries confront increasing pressure to convert climate commitments into real-world responses to rising temperatures, shifting rainfall patterns, and other climate-related risks, officials at the summit recognized that policy formulation alone is insufficient. Securing sustainable financing, strengthening partnerships, and maintaining political and institutional commitment are vital to ensuring that adaptation plans progress from policy documents to tangible actions.

The three-day conference aims to deepen cooperation among Ghana, Kenya, the Netherlands, and South Africa as they seek practical approaches to address the escalating impacts of climate change.
