George Afriyie: Ghana Premier League credibility concerns hurting sponsorship

Former Ghana Football Association vice-president George Afriyie has expressed concerns that the credibility of the Ghana Premier League is deterring major sponsors from investing in the competition. Mr Afriyie believes that perceptions of manipulation surrounding matches and results have undermined confidence in the league, making it difficult for companies to see value in backing it.

Speaking to Sporty FM, Mr Afriyie stated, "The struggle to attract sponsorship for the Ghana Premier League is because many people see the competition as being manipulated. When a league lacks credibility, which company would want to invest in it?" He made these remarks in anticipation of the 2026/27 Ghana Premier League season, which is set to commence on September 5.

Despite being one of Ghana's most prominent sporting events, the league has faced persistent issues concerning its commercial viability and financial stability. Football clubs rely on sponsorships and other commercial partnerships to bolster their income beyond gate fees, broadcast rights, and other revenue streams. The integrity of match officiating, governance, and the league's overall legitimacy have been subjects of ongoing debate among fans and football stakeholders.

Afriyie believes that boosting the league's commercial prospects will demand more than just promoting the competition to potential sponsors. He argues that restoring confidence and trust within the Premier League is crucial for attracting substantial long-term investment in Ghanaian football. The 2026/27 season will feature teams vying for the title and seeding for continental competitions, with the season commencing on September 5.
