Child among six dead as Israel bombs seaside cafe in Gaza

An Israeli airstrike on a seaside cafe in Gaza killed six people, including a child, on Tuesday, Palestinian officials reported. Rescuers found shoes and blood among the debris, while several others were injured, with some falling into the port basin. The strike took place a day after US envoy Jared Kushner concluded inconclusive peace talks with representatives of Israel and Hamas.

The Israeli military claimed it targeted several Hamas commanders planning attacks on Israeli troops. Palestinian officials said more than 1,200 people have died in Israeli strikes since the ceasefire ended in October 2023, with 800 bodies recovered. The port has served as a large displacement camp for Palestinian families throughout the conflict, which began in October 2023.

Social media footage showed Palestinians attending to the wounded and airlifting them to hospitals. Despite the US' hopes of advancing President Donald Trump's peace plan, Israel rejected the proposal. US envoy Kushner departed Jerusalem on Monday following two days of talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Hamas leaders, but Israel insisted on maintaining its military presence in Gaza and rejecting troop withdrawals.
