Asus’s New Gadget Turns Almost Any Bicycle Into an E-Bike

Asus unveiled the Oxiis E250G1 Intelligent Bike Booster, a portable system to provide electric assistance to bicycles without altering their components. The device features a motor near the seat post driving the rear wheel through friction. It operates with a detachable battery and can deliver up to 500W of peak power, 50KM of claimed range, and a maximum assisted speed of 32KM/h.

Installation is straightforward, as it employs a friction-drive system, eliminating the need for wheel replacement or drivetrain modifications. The Oxiis system works with various bicycle types, including city, road, gravel, folding, hybrid, and hardtail mountain bikes. However, it is not suitable for full-suspension bikes or carbon-fiber seat posts, and is not recommended for heavily knobby tires.

The booster supports wheel sizes from 16 to 29 inches, tires up to 60mm wide, and seat posts between 25.4mm and 34.9mm in diameter. Users can select from three assistance modes: Eco for extended battery life, Normal for balanced assistance, and Sport for stronger support on hills. An anti-slip mechanism helps maintain pressure against the tire to enhance power transfer.

The system comes with a 158.4Wh, 36V removable battery that provides around 50KM in Eco mode, and up to 10KM in Sport mode, depending on terrain, rider input, and assistance level. Charging occurs via 100W USB-C Power Delivery, with a full charge taking about two hours. The complete system weighs 3.7KG and has dimensions of 400 × 84 × 128mm.

A smart brake light is integrated into the system, automatically turning on when the rider slows down. The Oxiis system is capped at 32KM/h, but local regulations may require a lower speed limit of 25KM/h. Asus has not released pricing, official release date, or initial market details.
