Xenophobia: Nigerian govt to evacuate 83 more Nigerians from South Africa Wednesday

The Nigerian government has announced plans to repatriate an additional 83 Nigerian citizens from South Africa on Wednesday, August 19, 2026. This evacuation is prompted by rising concerns over xenophobic attacks and escalating anti-foreigner sentiment in the country. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the decision in a statement released on Monday by their spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa.

The returnees will depart from Oliver Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg at approximately 3:35 p.m. local time aboard a South African Airways flight. Upon arrival at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, they are expected to arrive around 8:45 p.m. on the same day. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its gratitude to private individuals who have generously sponsored the returnees' air tickets.

This latest evacuation marks the conclusion of the Federal Government's voluntary evacuation program, which facilitated the return of nearly 1,490 Nigerians from South Africa amid similar concerns. The administration of President Bola Tinubu remains steadfast in its commitment to safeguarding the welfare, dignity, and interests of Nigerians both domestically and abroad.

The government's Citizen Diplomacy policy recognizes Nigerians living overseas as valuable assets for national development, emphasizing the priority given to their safety and well-being. The Ministry commended the individuals and philanthropists who provided financial support for this evacuation, highlighting their patriotic and selfless actions.

The government encourages broader collaboration from the private sector, corporate bodies, state governments, philanthropists, and other Nigerians at home and abroad to further assist citizens facing emergencies abroad. Nigeria intends to continue diplomatic efforts with South Africa to address the root causes of xenophobia and prevent further attacks on Nigerians and other Africans.
