Why Trump wants to cut US military drills with South Korea over Iran

President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that the United States would reduce joint military exercises with South Korea due to South Korea's lack of participation in the "denuclearization of the Islamic Republic of Iran." The US President also claimed that North Korea had been "unthreatening and respectful" to him. North Korea had previously criticized the exercises, calling them a provocation that escalates tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

South Korean officials stated that the drills commenced on Monday as planned. This move comes shortly after South Korean President Lee Jae Myung suggested talks with North Korea to officially end the Korean War. Trump has frequently expressed dissatisfaction with allies for not providing sufficient military or logistical support in the ongoing conflict with Iran.

He has also criticized the size and cost of the US military presence in South Korea. The Ulchi Freedom drills, a significant joint military exercise between the US and South Korea, are expected to involve around 28,500 personnel from South Korea and the US, along with military personnel from 11 UN Command member states. The exercise has been conducted annually since 1976, with the latest rebranding in 2022.

The ongoing tensions between North and South Korea, exacerbated by North Korea's nuclear ambitions, have intensified since the Trump administration's failed summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in 2019.
