Iran threatens to go on offensive in Strait of Hormuz if diplomacy with US fails

Iran has announced its intention to adopt an offensive stance in the Strait of Hormuz should diplomatic efforts with the US fail, according to a senior Iranian official speaking to Reuters on Monday (Aug 17). The official stated that Iran would be prepared to carry out a timely and precise military attack on the US naval blockade if talks to end the conflict did not materialize within the specified timeframe.

The US and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in June, which set a 60-day deadline for reaching a comprehensive agreement aimed at halting the war and addressing broader issues such as Iran's nuclear program. However, the agreement quickly collapsed due to disagreements over the Strait of Hormuz, with Tehran asserting its right to control the waterway and the US rejecting this interpretation. Since the resumption of hostilities, Iran has accused the US of violating the terms of the MoU.
