Two people dead in a road crash at Assin Fosu

A head-on collision between a Scienta vehicle and a Metro Mass Transit bus left two individuals dead on Sunday night near Assin Fosu in the Central Region. The crash unfolded around 7 p.m. when the Scienta, en route from Cape Coast, tried to overtake another vehicle and crossed into the path of an oncoming MMT bus from Kumasi. The driver of the Scienta and one passenger perished in the accident, while five other Scienta occupants were injured and transported to a hospital for treatment.

The Central North Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Department Commander, ASP Wonder Lumor, explained that the Scienta's driver moved into the opposite lane as the vehicle being overtaken was slowing down for a turn, leading to the collision with the MMT bus. The impact caused the bus to skid off the road and crash into the wall of Obiri Yeboah Senior High School, causing the structure to collapse.

Three children who were walking along the road were struck by the bus and also suffered injuries, which they were subsequently treated for and are now in stable condition at a hospital. The MMT bus driver, William Aboagye, confirmed that there were no fatalities among his passengers, stating that the collision happened unexpectedly as the Scienta moved into the bus's path during an overtaking maneuver.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident, which highlights ongoing concerns about risky overtaking practices, especially on busy highways where motorists share limited space with pedestrians and other road users. Authorities have been urging motorists to drive with utmost caution, particularly when overtaking, and to ensure the road ahead is clear before attempting such maneuvers.
