TMC Launches Special Hemoglobinopathy Screening Drive For School Students Across Thane

The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has commenced a special hemoglobinopathy screening initiative for students attending municipal schools across the city. Spearheaded by the Education Department in partnership with Rajiv Gandhi Medical College and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital, Kalwa, the campaign aims to identify and manage inherited blood disorders like sickle cell anemia and thalassemia among young individuals.

The program's inaugural screening took place on August 15, 2026, at TMC School No. 69, Kalwa. Medical professionals from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital assessed 250 students from Municipal Secondary School No. 2, alongside Schools Nos. 69, 70, and 115. Key attendees included former corporator Aparna Salvi, Dr. Swapnali Kadam, Dean of Rajiv Gandhi Medical College and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital, Lalita Jadhav, Head of Biochemistry, Mustaq Pathan, Ravindra Patil, Santosh Dalvi, Kiran Lahamte and Usha Fapale, Special Educator Pramila Mhatre, along with school principals Vaishali Prabhu, Pratibha Patil, and Shaban Shaikh.

The screening underscores the importance of early detection for effective management of these genetic conditions, ensuring students receive appropriate medical care, vaccinations, and nutritional support. This collaborative effort underscores Thane's commitment to safeguarding the health and well-being of its young citizens through proactive healthcare measures.
