There looks to be a prime candidate for the number ten role at Manchester City

Manchester City boasts two elite options for the number ten role in their squad: Phil Foden and Rayan Cherki. Both players are expected to play significant roles under manager Enzo Maresca throughout the 2026-27 season. Phil Foden has been involved in Manchester City’s three preseason friendlies, including the FA Community Shield, where he started again after replacing Rayan Cherki in the 60th minute.

While Foden is fighting to regain his best form, Cherki is seen as the more promising candidate for the number ten position. Foden recently signed a contract extension with Manchester City, indicating his importance to the team. However, his recent form has been inconsistent, particularly in the FA Community Shield match against Arsenal.

On the other hand, Cherki, despite his World Cup disappointment, displayed exceptional intent and impact during his 30 minutes on the pitch against Arsenal. He completed 29 out of 33 passes and created two chances, saving a shot for Antoine Semenyo and delivering a dangerous low cross. Considering Foden’s patchy performance and Cherki’s promising display, Rayan Cherki seems to be the prime candidate for the number ten role in Manchester City’s upcoming fixtures.
