TCN boosts Lagos power capacity with two transmission projects

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has enhanced power capacity in the Apapa corridor through the completion of two significant projects. On August 17, 2026, TCN's Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz, unveiled the two new 60 MVA 132/33kV GIS substations at the upgraded Apapa Road Transmission Substation and two fresh 100 MVA power transformers at the 132/33kV Ijora Transmission Substation.

These upgrades have collectively increased the bulk power capacity at the Apapa substation to 180 MVA and the Ijora substation's capacity to 230 MVA, equivalent to 184 MW. TCN anticipates that these projects will bolster power availability to Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC), improving the electricity supply to industrial, commercial, and residential areas encircling the Apapa corridor.

Abdulaziz emphasized that the Apapa Road Transmission Substation upgrade has substantially boosted the bulk power available for offtake by EKEDC, catering to customers in the corridor. The projects underscore the Federal Government's investment in critical electricity infrastructure and TCN's dedication to constructing a transmission network capable of meeting Nigeria's mounting energy demand.

The Apapa Road project was funded and executed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in a strategic partnership with TCN. In a previous update, TCN General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, highlighted the energisation of two 60 MVA 132/33kV power transformers at the rehabilitated Apapa Road Transmission Substation four months prior, which included the installation of modern Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS).

This development was expected to bolster bulk electricity supply to EKEDC, facilitating improved distribution to key industrial and residential areas. Abdulaziz pledged TCN's commitment to the ongoing rehabilitation and expansion of substations and transmission lines to maintain its capacity in efficiently transporting bulk electricity from generation stations to distribution load centers.

TCN's CEO reiterated the importance of reliable electricity supply to industrial clusters, commercial districts, healthcare facilities, educational institutions, and households. The latest Apapa and Ijora projects augment Lagos' transmission capacity as TCN endeavors to fortify the network and enhance bulk electricity delivery to distribution load centers.
