Supreme Court rejects Trump’s longshot effort to overturn E. Jean Carroll verdict

In a recent development, the Supreme Court has decided not to reconsider its previous rejection of President Donald Trump's appeal related to the 2023 E. Jean Carroll case. This means that the $5 million jury award awarded to Carroll is final, as her representatives confirmed that the payment was made in July. The court did not provide any further explanation for its decision and there were no dissents recorded.

Since the 1960s, there has not been a request for a rehearing. In 2023, a jury found Trump liable for sexually abusing Carroll in the dressing room of a Manhattan department store during the 1990s, as well as for defaming her on social media in 2022. In 2024, Trump was ordered to pay an additional $83.3 million in damages for the defamation claim.

Trump, who maintains his innocence, is currently appealing this judgment, with the case pending review by the Supreme Court. In his appeal, Trump argues that his 2019 comments about Carroll, later found to be defamatory, were official statements made during his presidency, thus granting him immunity from the legal case.
