Russia begins new talent visa with faster route to permanent residence

Russia has launched a new multiple-entry talent visa aimed at highly skilled foreign professionals, providing a quicker path to permanent residency and, in certain cases, even Russian citizenship. The visa is designed for individuals who can contribute to Russia's economy, technology, and other key sectors, including scientists, researchers, entrepreneurs, and those with unique expertise.

Creative professionals and athletes are also eligible. The process begins with applications being reviewed by Russia's new Agency for Attracting Foreign Talents before moving forward with the standard immigration procedure. A key advantage of the talent visa is the potential to avoid some of the requirements of Russia's usual immigration route, which typically demands a temporary residence permit for at least eight months before applying for permanent residency.

This new system may offer a more expedited route to long-term residency for highly skilled foreigners that Russia wishes to attract and retain. The policy could also grant some talent visa holders a simplified path to full Russian citizenship, contingent on individual achievements or backing from relevant government entities. Essentially, the talent visa transforms into a long-term immigration pathway for professionals whose skills are deemed valuable to Russia.

This new initiative follows Russia's ongoing adjustments to immigration policies to lure foreign visitors and experts, maintaining a fully digital electronic visa process. Applications can be submitted online, and applicants usually receive approval within four calendar days. The application fee is around $50, with children under six exempt from the fee, aside from any bank charges.

This move represents another step in Russia's strategy to attract specific categories of foreigners, especially those with skills and accomplishments that fit the country's economic, technological, scientific, and cultural objectives.
