Moroccan security forces arrest nearly 300 migrants trying to reach Spain’s Ceuta

Moroccan security forces apprehended nearly 300 migrants attempting to reach Spain's Ceuta from both land and sea, according to Moroccan state television. The arrests, reported by Medi 1 TV, targeted 294 migrants from sub-Saharan Africa who were trying to enter Ceuta on Saturday. Additionally, 61 Moroccans were detained for allegedly assisting in the migration attempts.

The surge in illegal crossings followed a surge in social media posts urging migrants to head to Ceuta, a Spanish city on Morocco's northern coast. In response, both Moroccan and Spanish authorities increased their security presence and restricted movement in the region. This incident follows a deadly migration crisis two weeks ago, during which tens of thousands of impoverished migrants, misled by false information, rushed towards Ceuta, resulting in at least 90 deaths on both sides of the border.

Moroccan authorities have not disclosed the number of security personnel deployed along the border to prevent future migration attempts, citing reasons of national security. A senior Moroccan diplomat stated that over 20,000 Moroccan security personnel are stationed daily along the border with Ceuta, at a significant financial cost.

As many as 20,000 migrants from various African nations journey to Morocco annually, fleeing conflict, poverty, and instability, all in pursuit of a pathway into Europe.
