Political competition, technology safeguarded Osun poll — Election observatory group

The Athena Election Observatory has praised the 2026 Osun State governorship election for maintaining electoral integrity amidst fierce political competition and enhanced technology. The independent electoral integrity initiative, founded by former Aviation Minister Osita Chidoka, assessed the August 15 election where Accord Party candidate Ademola Adeleke defeated APC candidate Bola Oyebamiji.

Adeleke secured 511,067 votes, while Oyebamiji received 444,815 votes. The observatory noted that political rivalry made large-scale manipulation of the poll difficult due to logistical and structural challenges. The voter population expanded by 19.8% from 2022, and accredited voters rose by 21.7%, suggesting a larger electorate could dilute the effectiveness of retail vote buying.

Both main political parties saw significant vote increases, with Adeleke's total rising 27.4% and Oyebamiji's increasing 18.4%. Technological improvements included the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, real-time polling-unit results uploads, and structured data entries, creating a more transparent and auditable process. However, the observatory identified areas for improvement, such as upload delays, public transmission timelines, overall system resilience, and digital records reconciliation.

The observatory will conduct a full post-election audit to ensure the declared winner's victory is backed by a resilient, transparent, and accurate electoral process.
