Pedalling back in time for Merdeka

On a recent ride through George Town, nearly 100 cyclists donned classic bicycles and retro outfits to take part in the Kayuhan Semarak Merdeka Serata-rata event. The 24km route brought together riders aged from 11 to 81, who fondly remembered bicycles that once were common on Malaysian roads. Organiser Razman Mohammed Sidek, 43, aimed to give younger Malaysians a glimpse of that slower, analogue era.

The event, organised by Wharong Karat with Pak Lang G Basikal Klasik Sungai Dua, Butterworth, and now in its sixth year, has grown significantly, attracting more participants each year. Older riders shared memories of bicycles that once served as everyday transport, while younger participants encountered machines they may have only seen in photographs or family storerooms.

The event fostered a sense of nostalgia and community, as participants, both young and old, pedalled past landmarks like Komtar and Padang Kota, turning the city's streets into a cheerful parade of bicycles, flags, and vintage flair.
