Pedalling back in time for Merdeka

Classic bicycles, colourful costumes and the national flag, the Jalur Gemilang, set the stage for a nostalgic Merdeka celebration through George Town's streets. Nearly 100 cyclists, ranging in age from 11 to 81, participated in the Kayuhan Semarak Merdeka Serata-rata event. Many were drawn by their love for bicycles that once dominated Malaysian roads.

Organiser Razman Mohammed Sidek, 43, aimed to give younger Malaysians a glimpse of Malaysia's past by showcasing old bicycles. The ride, organized by Wharong Karat and Pak Lang G Basikal Klasik Sungai Dua, Butterworth, has grown from 15 participants in its first year to nearly 100 in its sixth. Older riders reminisce about the bicycles that once served as everyday transport, while younger participants see these machines primarily in photographs or family heirlooms.

This mix of generations creates a joyful display of bicycles, flags, and vintage flair along the city's streets.
