PawMatch: Finding the Dog That Matches Your Personality ๐พ
This is a submission for Weekend Challenge: Dog Days Edition What I Built Dogs have always been more than just pets. They become our companions, our walking partners, our stress relievers, and sometimes the reason we smile after a difficult day. For International Dog Day, I wanted to build something that celebrates that connection. I built PawMatch , an interactive dog breed discovery experienceโฆ
This is an account of the PawMatch project, a dog breed discovery experience created for International Dog Day. The concept behind PawMatch is to help users explore dog breeds based on their personalities, traits, and lifestyles, moving beyond the typical "cutest dog" choice.
Upon visiting the PawMatch website (pawmatch-ochre.vercel.app), users are greeted with a collection of interactive dog breed cards. Each breed card displays key information about the breed, such as its personality traits, energy level, size, lifespan, and lifestyle compatibility. This approach aims to present dogs as distinct characters rather than mere data entries, sparking interest and engagement among users.
One of the standout features of PawMatch is its Favorites management system. Users can save their favorite breeds using localStorage, allowing them to create a personal shortlist of breeds they connect with. Even after refreshing the page, users' favorite breeds persist, ensuring a seamless and convenient experience.
For those who may not know exactly what they're looking for, PawMatch offers a Surprise Me feature. This feature randomly introduces users to a breed they might not have considered before, increasing the chances of discovering a perfect match they hadn't previously explored.
Users can also refine their search using the Breed Search and Filter feature. They can look up breeds by name and filter them based on energy level (Low, Medium, or High). This helps narrow down choices and discover breeds that align with different lifestyles and preferences.
To further enhance the user experience, PawMatch includes a Breed Comparison tool. Users can compare up to two dog breeds side-by-side, analyzing key differences in size, energy level, lifespan, and traits. This allows for informed decisions about which breed best suits their needs.
The project utilizes a component-based architecture, with each component having a specific responsibility. This includes components like BreedCard, BreedGrid, BreedModal, SearchBar, CompareBar, and DogFact. By keeping the application modular and reusable, the project becomes easier to maintain and extend.
The breed data used in PawMatch is structured and contains breed information, personality traits, energy levels, and lifestyle recommendations. Instead of overwhelming users with a wall of text, the project focuses on creating interactive experiences around this data. By adding subtle interactions, such as card hover animations and smooth UI movement using Framer Motion, the browsing experience becomes more engaging and enjoyable.
Creating PawMatch presented a challenge in deciding what not to build. Initial ideas included adding AI-generated dog portraits, user uploads, advanced breed recommendations, and more complex matching algorithms. However, due to limited time, the focus was on delivering a polished and well-rounded experience rather than accumulating many unfinished features.
Through this project, the creator learned that even a simple idea can become interesting when centered around the user's emotions. PawMatch aims to celebrate International Dog Day by offering a platform where users can discover a companion that resonates with their personality and lifestyle. After all, dogs bring happiness and magic into people's lives, and PawMatch strives to help users find that special connection.
