Landslide kills 1 in Geoje as torrential rain batters southern Korea

Torrential rain across South Korea's southern regions during the National Liberation Day long weekend triggered landslides, flooding, and extensive damage. Geoje Island in South Gyeongsang Province was particularly affected, receiving 815.5 millimeters of rain from 9 a.m. Saturday to 11 a.m. Monday. The island had recently emerged from a prolonged drought.

As a result, one person lost their life and four others sustained injuries, according to the Ministry of the Interior and Safety. At approximately 4:42 a.m. on Monday, a landslide struck the first floor of an apartment building in Geoje, claiming one resident's life. Two others were rescued and are receiving treatment for their injuries.

Rescue operations continued throughout Monday afternoon for over 20 people stranded by flooding in various Geoje areas, including Hoejin Village. Additionally, about 100 residents from Yesol Village were being evacuated due to the risk of further landslides. As of 4:30 a.m. on Monday, the National Fire Agency had rescued 154 Geoje residents or had them evacuated. Over 20 emergency calls were received.
