Edo Assembly: Why we removed Agbebaku – New Speaker

The newly elected Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Yekini Idiaye, has revealed the reasons behind the removal of his predecessor, Blessing Agbebaku. During a press conference on Monday, Idiaye explained that Agbebaku's tenure was marked by poor leadership and widespread corruption. The House, which had been inaugurated on June 16, 2023, under his leadership, faced numerous challenges including prolonged adjournments, sometimes lasting up to 30 days without valid reasons.

Idiaye expressed dissatisfaction with Agbebaku's leadership style, stating that it had been hindering the government's work. The new Speaker emphasized the need to support their performing governor and ensure that any actions detrimental to the governor's progress would be halted. Idiaye assured the public that efforts would be made to assist Governor Monday Okpebholo in advancing the state.

Agbebaku formally resigned during a brief plenary session on Monday, August 17, 2026, which lasted less than 30 minutes.
